Dr. Thomas Steineke is a board-certified neurosurgeon with advanced training in complex brain tumors including gliomas, glioblastomas, pituitary tumors, and meningiomas as well as neurovascular conditions such as aneurysms, epilepsy, seizures and arteriovenous malformations in both adults and children.
He served as HMH Central Region Chair of Neurosurgery and Vice Chair of Neuroscience at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. Dr. Steineke specialized in the use of 3D virtual reality (VR) technology and developing innovative approaches to provide the most advanced and minimally invasive techniques available to enhance a patient's recovery and minimally impact their daily lives.
JFK University Medical Center is the only hospital in New Jersey and one of a few centers in the nation to use Surgical Theater’s VR technology, which allows neurosurgeons to create 360-degree VR reconstructions of adult and pediatric patients’ brains. These reconstructions allow neurosurgeons to better plan, practice and perform surgeries as he is able to fully visualize and effectively target the neurological condition, while limiting the amount of time spent in the operating room.
As part of the multidisciplinary team at the Brain and Spine Tumor Program at JFK University Medical Center, Dr. Steineke worked alongside neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical neuro-oncologists, neuro-pathologists, and neuro-radiologists utilizing innovative new treatments to provide comprehensive patient and family-centered care.
Dr. Steineke also led the pediatric neurosurgery team and was part of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at JFK University Medical Center, offering a comprehensive, personalized approach to address the medical, surgical and rehabilitation needs of patients experiencing seizures.
He was a part of a comprehensive team caring for people who have experienced or are at risk for stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). He specialized in complex neurovascular disease such as brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, dural and arteriovenous fistulas, vascular tumors, cavernous malformations, carotid stenosis and carotid or vertebral dissections.
Dr. Steineke attended medical school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine while also completing a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Loma Linda University. He then moved to the West Coast for his neurological residency at UCLA Los Angeles Medical Center, and returned to the East Coast for a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Dr. Steineke’s dynamic specialized training allows him to provide state-of-the-art care to both adult and pediatric patients.
