Dr. Schoondyke recently returned to East Tennessee from South Boston, Virginia, where he was in private practice at Halifax Heart Center. While in Virginia, he practiced invasive cardiology and also held privileges at Duke University Medical Center. Today, Dr. Schoondyke holds a university appointment at James H. Quillen College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. He lives in Johnson City with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Jeffrey and Katie.
According to Dr. Schoondyke, "The biggest challenge facing a cardiologist today is staying current with the numerous clinical trials that shape the practice of cardiology. It is imperative that we embrace this data with intellectual flexibility and a cautious eye, so when we offer our patients the newest therapeutic techniques, we do not compromise their safety."
Originally from Moline, Illinois, Dr. Schoondyke and his family moved to Johnson City in 1999 to begin his internal medicine residency at ETSU. He then entered into his cardiology fellowship at ETSU and completed his training in 2005. Prior to receiving his medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in 1999, he completed his undergraduate education at Northern Arizona University and earned a Masters degree in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. Dr. Schoondyke is currently board certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Schoondyke has authored and published numerous scientific papers and is participating in a variety of ongoing cardiovascular clinical trials with his colleague, Dr. Jack Whitaker. He is a former Chief Resident, was elected to chief of chief residents in 2002, and served as chief cardiology fellow in 2005. Away from the office, he enjoys playing in a rock 'n roll band, coaching his children's athletic teams and spending time on the lake with his family.
