"You have to be able to talk to people. They do well because you do your job well. "
When Dr. Hopkins received a call from Dr. James Evans in Johnson City, Tennessee, asking if he was interested in a position in his office, Dr. Hopkins was excited at the prospect of moving back to the Appalachian Mountains. He was born and raised in Parkersburg, West Virginia. As a boy, his next-door neighbor was a surgeon who periodically would let him tag along and visit the operating rooms. At twelve, he watched his first surgery and knew immediately he would grow up to be a surgeon. He was an honor student in high school and was awarded scholarships in football and wrestling to West Virginia University in Morgantown. He worked his way through undergraduate school and medical school at WVU.
Dr. Hopkins completed his general surgery residency at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio and then moved to Detroit, Michigan for his vascular fellowship at Wayne State. It was here he had the opportunity to study under the world-renowned cerebrovascular surgeon, Dr. Berguer. Dr. Hopkins was finishing his fellowship and hoping to relocate closer to his hometown when Dr. Evans called. After visiting the area, he, his wife and two young sons were convinced Johnson City was the perfect fit.
Coming home to fulfill his lifelong dream as a surgeon has given Dr. Hopkins the opportunity to care for patients the way he was taught by his mentor and neighbor many years ago.
Dr. Hopkins is a board certified surgical specialist in general, endovascular, aortoiliac and peripheral vascular surgery.
