Michael D. Thomas, M.D. joined Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center in 2005. Dr. Thomas specializes in Pediatric Orthopedics, Scoliosis and Spine Deformities in children and adolescents. Dr. Thomas has the treatment philosophy to use non-surgical treatments to the fullest extent possible, consistent with an optimal outcome. Dr. Thomas is committed to the education and engagement of parents and patients about their options in healthcare.
Dr. Thomas received his Doctor of Medicine from Howard University, Washington, D.C. and completed his Orthopedic Surgical Residency at Howard University Hospital. He then completed a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship at Newington Children's Hospital. Before joining Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center, Dr. Thomas served for 17 years as an Attending Surgeon in the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Thomas brings vast experience to his practice acquired during his years at the teaching hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center. Children's National Medical Center is consistently ranked as one of the best children's hospitals in the nation. While in Washington, Dr. Thomas held the position of Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics at George Washington University Medical Center.
While practicing at Children's Hospital, Dr. Thomas directed the care of thousands of children and families with a diverse array of traumatic, congenital, acquired and developmental orthopedic conditions. Dr. Thomas was twice cited as a top doctor by metropolitan area physicians in a survey by the Washingtonian Magazine.
Dr. Thomas has authored and co-authored numerous articles, book chapters and papers presented at national meetings. He studied the care of patients with severe scoliosis at the Minnesota Spine Center, the Spine Deformity Study Group, and other leading centers. He also studied the Ponseti Method of clubfoot care with Ignacio Ponseti, M.D.
