Dr. Martin E. Katz is an oncologist and hematologist at MOH’s Hamden Surgery and Medical Center facility. Dr. Katz entered the field for a simple reason: "To help people get better when they’re ill, and to prevent illness." He takes great satisfaction from improving the quality of life of his patients.
"I get very involved with each patient and their family members in order to provide individualized treatment," says Dr. Katz, who was inspired to enter the specialty as a fourth-year medical student working with several "caring, vibrant hematologists" who he tries to emulate in his own work.
Dr. Katz enjoys the camaraderie at MOH of collaborating and conferring with physicians who share his passion for oncology and hematology, allowing him to draw on their knowledge and share his own expertise in order to provide the highest quality patient care. "I admire my colleagues at MOH," he says. "They’re hard-working, and they have high-ethical standards and great intellectual curiosity."
Encouraged by recent advances in the treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, and germ cell cancers, Dr. Katz is optimistic about what the near future holds for therapies that target specific gene mutations or gene products that cause or drive cancer growth.
Experienced in the treatment of all forms of cancer and blood disorders, Dr. Katz has a particular interest in the treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma, and a variety of hematomic conditions including anemia and blood clotting. He is known for groundbreaking work in the treatment of acute myelocytic leukemia.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Katz and his family now call Woodbridge home. He enjoys hiking and traveling, particularly to Big Bend National Park in Texas, and he is an avid coin collector. He sometimes dreams of becoming a park ranger in a national park.
