Dr. Joe Cookman's career has taken him many places but, in the end, there's no place like home. And "home" is northern Iowa.
A native of Mason City, Dr. Cookman earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, and a medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine & Health Sciences (now Des Moines University) in Des Moines.
Dr. Cookman entered the army after medical school, serving an internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, TX, and completing his cardiology training at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Aurora, CO. He was promoted to major in 1982, and left the service in 1986.
Dr. Cookman then began practicing cardiology in Grand Forks, ND, and later returned to Mason City before joining Iowa Heart Center in 1998. He is board certified in cardiology and interventional cardiology, and currently practices on the campus of Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, where he serves as director of cardiology.
