Brief Intro

Dr. Steadman is the managing partner and founder of The Steadman Clinic as well as, a founder of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. Dr. J. Richard Steadman, a native of Texas, received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he played football for Bear Bryant his freshman and sophomore years. After college, he received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Following internship, two years in the army, and an orthopaedics residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Dr. Steadman moved with his family to Lake Tahoe, where he practiced general orthopaedics, with increasing emphasis on the treatment of knee disorders. While living there, he was named Chief Physician for the United States Ski Team. During his time at Lake Tahoe, Dr. Steadman began developing the numerous surgical and rehabilitation techniques that permit elite athletes to return to competition in their sports at pre-injury levels. He also established his non-profit sports medicine foundation for research in knee surgery and rehabilitation in 1988. That organization exists today as the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. In 1990, Dr. and Mrs. Steadman moved to Vail. He was joined in practice by Dr. Richard Hawkins, a specialist in shoulder disorders. By this time, Dr. Steadman had limited his practice to the surgical and conservative treatment of knee disorders. In 2004, Dr. Hawkins moved his practice to Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dr. Steadman has developed numerous procedures for knee surgery and rehabilitation that have been adopted by orthopaedists worldwide for the treatment of various knee disorders. His practice is limited to arthroscopic and open surgery of the knee, with particular focus on the treatment of athletic injuries and degenerative problems of the knee.
