Brief Intro

Dr. Spellman is a native Washingtonian who represents the 3rd generation of his family to practice medicine and perform surgery in the local community. He was a National Achievement Scholar at Johns Hopkins University, from which he received his BA as a Natural Sciences major. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California at San Francisco, where he was also a pre-residency fellow in Ophthalmic Pathology, and served as an intern in internal medicine at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, Calif. His post-doctoral training included a Residency in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School and a Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute /University of Miami. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), Dr. Spellman has served as an ABO Associate Board Examiner in Retina since 1988 and is licensed to practice in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. He has served as Director of Retinal Services at Howard University Hospital and Vice Chairman of Ophthalmology at The Washington Hospital Center, maintaining affiliations with both of those hospitals as well as the Friendship Surgical Center. He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retinal Specialists, Washington, D.C. Ophthalmology Society, National Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Spellman has authored several papers and has made a considerable number of national presentations. He has been named a Washingtonian \"Top Doctor,\" been recognized in \"Best Doctors in America\" and selected as one of \"America's Top Ophthalmologists.\" His personal interests include The Georgetown Preparatory Schoolâ€”where he serves as a Trustee and is a former \"Alumnus of the Year\"â€”golf and antique cars.
