William L. Pfaff, M.D., specializes in spinal reconstructive surgery of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Dr. Pfaff is well versed in the newest technologies for spinal reconstructive surgery, including total disc arthroplasty, XLIF, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Surgeries cover all degenerative and traumatic conditions of the spine.
Dr. Pfaff is a native of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. After graduating high school, he moved to Wilmington, Delaware, with his wife Rosemary and son William to attend the University of Delaware where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1997 with honors.
Dr. Pfaff then worked for Johnson & Johnson as a biochemist prior to returning to school to pursue his medical degree. He then attended Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University from 1999–2003 where he obtained his medical degree. During his time at Jefferson Medical College he developed an early interest in spine surgery. While there, he contributed to publishing guidelines for return-to-play criteria for athletes with cervical spine injuries that are recognized nationally by team doctors, athletic trainers, and spine surgeons alike (The Spine Journal: Official Journal of the North American Spine Society 2002;(2)5:351–6).
He completed Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at Temple University Hospitals in Philadelphia. Dr. Pfaff then completed his fellowship training in Spinal Reconstructive Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, University of Pennsylvania, under the guidance of Richard Balderston, M.D.
During his undergraduate education and through all his medical training, Dr. Pfaff continued to reside in northern Delaware. He and his wife Rosemary have four children and have been together since meeting in high school. He enjoys his time away from medicine by engaging in activities with his wife and children. He also enjoys playing the guitar and is an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan.
Dr. Pfaff is board eligible by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is committed to the collaborative effort of surgical and nonsurgical care of all spinal disorders.
