Brief Intro

Dr. Hunter grew up partly in the Midwest and then moved to Southern California for high school. After getting a bachelors degree at Harvard in the turbulent late 1960â€™s, he attended medical school at UCLA. He became interested in the alternative cultures that were evolving at the time and embarked on a path to create alternative medical institutions. As part of the back to the land movement he moved to Garberville in the late 1970â€™s after completing a family practice residency at UC Davis. For the next 20 years he served as medical director of Redwoods Rural Health Center in Redway and was on staff at Southern Humboldt Community Hospital (now renamed Phelps Hospital) taking all comers and doing family practice and emergency medicine. In 1998 he moved up to northern Humboldt County and accepted the position of Medical Director of the Open Door Community Health Centers. Currently his work is two-thirds clinical and one-third administrative. In a blended family situation he has raised a daughter, son, and step son. He is physically active and enjoys tennis and bicycling. Music has been a big focus of his life. He plays old time fiddle and occasionally sings with a country-folk band.
