Why I Chose Medicine
Why Medicine? Because I grew up in a home in Redwood City, California, where Rico went to work, Jennie cooked the meals and ran the household, and where they both loved me beyond words.
Because I soon learned at school that helping people was more fun than competing with them.
Because I went to seminary in Mountain View and Menlo Park, studied theology and philosophy, obtained a master’s degree, and began to realize that words without action mean nothing.
Because one day my Uncle Tony asked, "So, now what are you going to do?"
Because I went to study medicine at the University of California, Davis, and met dedicated, bright students who wanted to become doctors, not so they would be called 'doctor' but so they would learn to sew up wounds and ease their patient's problems.
Because I chose Kaiser Permanente and its integrated care in 1980, and I have watched the organization stay focused on this goal through decades of change and upheaval. Lines are still sometimes long, frustrations occasionally present. But medical care is of the highest quality.
Because I have had the unspeakable good fortune to live with Breda, Joseph, and Julia, who have declined to change the locks at home despite my long hours away from them.
Yes, I am a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and Chief of the Department of Surgery. I am very proud of my surgical colleagues. But this is not why I practice medicine.
I practice medicine because I have been given a great privilege; it is a wonder to reach into another human being's body and change their life forever. I am humbled by this honor.
