I come from a scientific background. Prior to entering medicine, I was teaching biology at Harvard University and conducting research in population genetics and population ecology. I have done field work in the Rocky Mountains, Central and South America, and Indonesian Borneo. Despite my efforts, questions of why there are so many fig trees in the forest remain unanswered. My medical training was at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. I completed my residency in internal medicine at Scripps Clinic in San Diego, where I served a year as chief resident. My cardiology fellowship was at the Scripps Clinic as well. I practiced cardiology in San Diego, Eugene, and Phoenix before joining the Southern California Permanente Medical Group in 2004. During that time, I enjoyed teaching residents and fellows and I was involved in research projects ranging from pulmonary hypertension in Gaucher Disease to platelet integrins.
