Watching my beloved grandmother suffer from cancer in my youth inspired me to become a doctor. I promised her if she could only _hang on,_ I would one day become a physician and take care of her. Sadly, fate had another plan. The pursuit of medicine for a girl from an Italian-immigrant family was not an easy one. Fortunately, I had parents who supported my dreams. While working in the South Bronx, I realized the language of sports was universal. As a family medicine doctor specializing in sports medicine, my professional life intertwines with my personal life. My husband, a professor at University of California, Berkeley, is also an exercise physiologist.
