Robert Welch, MD, MSA, FACOG, is Chairman and Program Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the Western Region of St. John Providence Health System (Providence Hospital, Southfield and Providence Park Hospital, Novi, Michigan). His area of special expertise is Maternal-Fetal Medicine which includes management of high-risk pregnancy (predominantly diabetes and hypertension), obstetrical ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis with chorionic villous sampling (CVS) and genetic amniocentesis. A graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Welch completed his internship and residency in OB/GYN and his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Wayne State University Affiliated Hospitals. He also completed an NIH-sponsored faculty fellowship with special emphasis on research on substance abuse in pregnancy at Wayne State University. He later received a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. Dr. Welch lectures nationally on current management and safety issues in obstetrics. His current research focus is on fetal lung maturity measurement using cell-free fetal mRNA in the maternal circulation. He has published over 30 scientific papers and over 20 chapters on high-risk pregnancy. He is a reviewer for several major medical journals. He also holds nine medical patents. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (full time affiliate) in the School of Medicine at Wayne State University. He is a Senior Member of the Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine, a member of the Detroit Medical Academy, a member of the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
