Introducing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty of Dentistry which bridges both Dentistry and Medicine. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons complete 4-6 years of hospital based training beyond the four years of general dental training. They receive in depth training in treating diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region. In addition to the surgical training in the specialty they also receive education and training in Medicine including Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit.
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is at the forefront of emerging technology and science. New advancements in the areas of Dental Implantology, Bone Regeneration, and Anesthesia allow the contemporary surgeon to reconstruct the compromised jaw so that a once “oral cripple†can enjoy the benefits of stable prosthetic teeth that look and function like natural teeth.
