Dr. Berkowitz is internationally recognized for his expertise in fetal diagnosis and therapy. In 2012, he was honored with the King Faisal International Prize for Medicine for his work in Minimal Invasive Fetal Management; an award he shares with Dr. James Bussel. Dr. Berkowitz joined Columbia's faculty after serving for 18 years as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) there. A pioneer in the use of obstetrical ultrasound, management and treatment fetal blood disorders, and fetal urinary tract obstructions, Dr. Berkowitz has developed several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to treat fetal diseases in utero. He brings to Columbia's MFM team a special interest in managing high-order, multiple pregnancies, including those with one or more abnormal fetuses. Appointed Director of Resident Education in 2005, and currently serving as Director of Quality Assurance, Dr. Berkowitz has trained a generation of MFM specialists. Dr. Berkowitz has published over 200 articles in peer reviewed journals, as well as authoring or editing more than 35 books and book chapters.
