Dr. Gamagami received his MD from George Washington University in 1989 and began his global training with the completion of his residency in general surgery at the University of California-San Diego (UCSD). He was awarded the Chief Resident, Chairmans Prize and Outstanding Teaching awards. After completing his surgical residency in 1994, Dr. Gamagami was appointed as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of California-San Diego. He also served as the director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Diego.
In 1995, Dr. Gamagami completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the UCSD-Cancer Center.
In 1996, he received his advanced laparoscopic certification at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Also in 1996, he was awarded an international scholarship as a traveling fellow in colorectal surgery at the University of Toulouse in France. In 1997, he was awarded a hepatobiliary and digestive surgery fellowship at Princess Grace Hospital, Monaco, Monte Carlo and later that year had an appointment as the honorary clinical senior registrar in Dundee, Scotland, refining his laparoscopic skills. After returning to San Diego, Dr. Gamagami continued as an academic surgeon and served as the chief of general surgery at the VA Medical Center until his departure to central Illinois from 2000-2006.
Dr. Gamagami has attended dozens of postgraduate training and certification seminars in topics ranging from laparoscopy, endoscopy, and breast and digestive cancers. His clinical research interests are in oncologic, laparoscopic and colorectal surgery. Dr. Gamagami has been extensively published in many peer-reviewed surgical journals and has given many lectures nationally and internationally.
