Acupuncture is at least 2000 years old. It is a system of maintaining health and treating disease which is often very different from the western medicine we are familiar with. There is increasing scientific evidence of its effectiveness. The National Institutes of Health issued a consensus statement about the effectiveness of acupuncture in 1997, bringing the discipline further into the mainstream. Acupuncturists insert very fine, sterile needles into precise locations, in specific combinations. The needles might be stimulated with heat or electricity. Many people feel nothing when needles are inserted. A treatment might last 10-40 minutes, with effects sometimes immediate and sometimes delayed. Many people feel most comfortable with a Medial Acupuncturist, a physician (MD or DO) who has pursued additional training in acupuncture. This combination is the "best of both worlds."
