Brief Intro

Paul Jorge Botelho was born on February 8, 1966, to Germano and Eduarda Botelho of Livromento, San Miguel, Portugal. At the age of two, he immigrated with his parents to the United States and settled near other family members in Taunton, Ma. Dr. Botelho and his two younger brothers, Daniel and Steven enrolled in the Taunton public school system where he enjoyed playing football, participating in the Debate Team, performing in the Drama Club, and holding the position of Treasurer in the National Honor Society. After graduating from Taunton High School in 1984, Dr. Botelho, while working evenings at Texas Instruments, put himself through school, earning a Bachelor%u2019s of Arts Degree from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Ma. While at Holy Cross, Dr. Botelho also contributed to the Chemistry Society and the College Honors Research Program. Having graduated Magna Cum Laude from Holy Cross and through the United States Air Force%u2019s Health Profession%u2019s Scholarship Program, Dr. Botelho was accepted into the Medical Doctorate Program at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Ma. Graduating at the age of 26 with a Medical Doctorate Degree, Dr. Botelho entered into Internship and Residency Training for an additional four years which took him to the Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Ma. and the University of Missouri. Once his Internship and Residency Training were completed, Dr. Botelho, looking forward to serving his Country, fulfilled his four year commitment to the United States Air Force as Chief of Ophthalmology in the 375th Medical Group at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. After concluding his military service in 2000, Dr. Botelho returned to practice in Fall River, Ma.. Dr. Botelho continued his desire to serve his by Country by also working as an Attending Physician at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Providence, RI. Wanting to provide an even greater degree of specialty care to the people of South Eastern Massachusetts, in 2004, Dr. Botelho completed a yearlong Fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the John%u2019s Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md. While at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Dr. Botelho partook in many clinical research projects and received the prestigious Terrance P. O%u2019Brien, MD Research Award. He also authored numerous research publications, book chapters and review articles. Upon returning to Fall River in the fall of 2005, Dr. Botelho performed the first Corneal Transplant Surgery at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, Ma. Dr. Botelho also resumed his teaching as the Assistant Clinical Professor, Chief of Cornea, in the Department of Ophthalmology at Brown University Medical School in Providence, RI. In 2007, he also received the H. Frederick Stephens, MD Resident Teaching Award. In the summer of 2008, Dr. Botelho and a select group of staff embarked on the first of many humanitarian Medical Missions with the Mobile Medical Mission Hospital to the Islands of the West Indies where hundreds of under-privileged persons received ophthalmic care and surgery. Having a vision of providing excellence in ophthalmic, surgical, and medical care to his patients while utilizing the latest techniques and diagnostic equipment in an ethical and compassionate fashion and wanting to provide an unparalleled work environment for his staff that allows for continuing education and opportunities for growth, Dr. Botelho opened his own practice, the Botelho Eye Institute in Fall River, Ma. in spring of 2009. Dr. Botelho enjoys spending time with his two children, Paul Jay and Kathryn Marie, and his loved ones as well as playing football, golfing, hiking, sky diving, sailing, spelunking, traveling, and reading about history. His desire is to be a humble servant of the Lord and to use the gifts that have been bestowed upon him to help those in need.
