Dr. Cleaveland is a surgical Ophthalmologist whose practice focuses on cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and medical and surgical treatment for glaucoma. Dr. Cleaveland is pleased to offer no-stitch cataract surgery using the newest technology available, including laser cataract surgery. He is able to customize each surgical case to give every effort to achieve an optimal outcome to meet every patient's needs. This includes treatment of age-related difficulty with near vision (presbyopia) and astigmatism during cataract surgery using advanced technology lens implants and the LenSx Laser.
Dr. Cleaveland places a great value on creating a professional relationship with each of his patients, taking the time to explain all treatment options, listening and answering questions, and working as a team to achieve the best possible results. Dr. Cleaveland additionally demonstrates his compassion for those who do not have access to surgical eye care by donating his time and surgical experience to those in need. He has traveled with Mercy Ships to Congo, Africa where he performed surgeries removing advanced cataracts for dozens of patients. He will continue the tradition of leading the region in providing the highest quality and latest technologically proven care for each patient in an atmosphere of friendship and compassion.
A true Tar Heel from Sylva, North Carolina, Dr. Cleaveland received his undergraduate degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in English. He earned his Medical degree from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech, and completed both a Medical Internship and Surgical Ophthalmology Residency training at Michigan State University at Metro Health Hospital. There he was recognized with multiple awards for surgical skill, and served as Chief Resident and Associate Clinical Instructor.
Dr. Cleaveland is actively involved in research. He has received several awards at state and national conferences for presentations of his investigations optimizing results of cataract surgery and improving post-operative patient experiences in femtosecond assisted LASIK. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons.
