A graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Dr. Zakem completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Metropolitan Hospital. He completed a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, followed by a Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. Dr. Zakem is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology. Dr. Zakem has served as Chief of Staff at Metropolitan Hospital and President of the American Cancer Society of Kent County. Presently he is on the Board of Directors at Metropolitan Hospital and the Hematology representative for the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of several organizations which include the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Internists, the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the Kent County Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. Dr. Zakem has been a member of Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan since 1986.
