Medical oncologist Michael Maitland, MD, PhD, focuses on caring for patients with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma and advanced solid tumors. He is a broadly trained physician-scientist who leads a research program in translational medicine and cancer therapeutics. The goal of translational medicine is to improve patient care by quickly and effectively applying recent advances in laboratory research. The program currently concentrates on kinase inhibitors, a large and promising class of new cancer drugs.Dr. Maitland applies his expertise in human genetics, clinical pharmacology, molecular biology, and clinical investigation to develop new methods to tailor the selection and dosing of medical treatment to each patient's specific circumstances. Personalized treatment aims to make cancer care more effective, but with fewer side effects and complications.
