Michael G. Vitale, MD, MPH, specializes in the nonoperative and operative treatment of children with complex spinal problems. He has a special interest in the treatment of Early Onset Scoliosis including use of the Vertical Expandable Titanium Rib Device (VEPTR) and growing rods. Dr. Vitale also performs complex limb reconstruction surgery of the lower extremity for problems such as Blount's disease, leg length differences, and malunions of bones. As director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Research Group, Dr. Vitale leads the clinical research team in their efforts, which is often funded by multi-year grants, and published in leading medical journals, as well as presented at national and international conferences. He has authored numerous original manuscripts and textbook chapters on the treatment of scoliosis. As a member of the Board of the National Chest Wall and Spine Deformity Study Group, he participates in multi-center studies aimed at improving the care of young people with scoliosis
Dr. Vitale believes in improving the quality of life for all children with orthopedic problems. He has been advocating for children globally through the Institute of Medicine, as well as the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America; he also traveled to Haiti to help young earthquake survivors.
