Arthroplasty; Arthroscopy; Orthopedic Reconstruction; Orthopedic Surgery Dr. Michael Ries is chief of the UCSF Arthroplasty Service and a specialist in the treatment of arthritis patients who require hip and knee treatment. He joined UCSF Medical Center in 1997, after serving as an arthritis fellow in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado in Denver. Ries earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH. He completed his general surgery residency at North Shore University Hospital in Manhassett, N.Y. and his orthopedic residency at State Hospital of New York at Stony Brook.
