Dr. Melanie Maquine is a board certified internist who has been in practice since 1995. Following her graduation from the State University of New York at Binghamton, where Dr. Maquine obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology, she attended Long Island University. Here she explored her interest in scientific research. As a graduate assistant, she instructed undergraduate students in laboratory studies while also performing independent research. She successfully defended her thesis on cyclic-AMP-dependent protein kinase phosphorylation of the purified insulin receptor. Dr. Maquine also obtained her Master of Science degree with a specialization in cellular biology.
After graduation, she accepted a position as a biomedical researcher in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Dr. Maquine developed biochemical assays which were used to detect the degradation products of cardiopulmonary bypass. Her research lead to publications in various scientific journals and in return, further sparking Dr. Maquine’s interest in medicine.
Dr. Maquine attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a dual internship at Wilson Regional Medical Center near Binghamton, New York. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola in 1995.
Dr. Maquine is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and successfully recertified in 2005. She is a member of the American College of Physicians as well as being on staff at New Island Hospital in Bethpage and North Shore University Hospital in Plainview. As of January 2007, Dr. Maquine was appointed to the medical board at New Island Hospital. Dr. Maquine continues to serve as a clinical medicine preceptor for third year medical students from the School of Medicine at the State University of New York at StonyBrook.
