Marie Steinmetz, M.D., is board certified in family medicine since 1983, and has demonstrated her commitment and devotion to the care of her patients since graduating from the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1980 and completing her residency in family practice at the University of North Carolina in 1983. Upon completing residency, she held positions in emergency medicine and in private family practice. Her other responsibilities have included residency teaching at Georgetown University and Medical Director for the Methadone Program for the City of Alexandria. In 1986, Dr. Steinmetz founded and became president of Alexandria Family Medicine. In 1996 she left there to enhance her clinical skills by specializing in complementary medical therapies. She studied acupuncture at UCLA, the leading center in the country for training physician acupuncturists.
Besides studying acupuncture at UCLA, she has attended seminars by some of the worlds leading acupuncturists from both Japan and France. In addition, she has studied Botanical Medicine at Columbia University. She has held clinical positions at Georgetown University, George Washington University and Medical College of Virginia. A frequent lecturer, she has lectured on acupuncture, herbs and complementary in pain management for physicians in the Washington metropolitan area. She was a lecturer and panelist for George Washington University's Introduction to Acupuncture course.
Dr. Steinmetz is board certified in family practice and medical acupuncture. She has served on the advisory committee for acupuncture for the State of Virginia. In 2003 and 2004, she served as chairman of the department of family practice at Inova Alexandria Hospital and was a member of the executive board of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University.
Her current interests are exploring the many treatment modalities termed complementary medicine and finding those that have validity to incorporate into medical practice. She is also interested in helping other physicians explore complementary treatments that may be valuable within their specialty.
Since 1997, Marie Steinmetz, M.D. has been advancing a comprehensive approach to healthcare by establishing Steinmetz Medical Associates, P.C. She commits herself to learning as much about her patients a possible and she creates a partnership with each individual to develop customized treatment plans that integrate these approaches to medical management.
