Lisa M. Nyberg, M.D., joined The Scripps Organ Transplant Program in 1996 and has served as associate medical director of liver transplantation since 1999. Dr. Nyberg graduated from Uppsala University Medical School in Uppsala, Sweden in 1986. She continued her postgraduate training in internal medicine and gastroenterology/hepatology at The Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden. Dr. Nyberg subsequently continued training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at The University of California, San Diego, and Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. She continued subspecialty training in transplant hepatology at Scripps while studying epidemiology and biostatistics at The Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University. She is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology.
Dr. Nyberg has numerous publications in the field of general hepatology and transplant hepatology. Her research interests include the treatment of post-transplant viral hepatitis and outcomes after liver transplantation. She is principle investigator or a subinvestigator on many clinical trials. She is a member of The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, The American Society of Transplantation, The American Gastroenterological Association, The American College of Gastroenterology, The American College of Physicians and The American Medical Association. She is a board member of The San Diego Chapter of The American Liver Foundation.
Dr. Nyberg works actively to promote organ and tissue donor awareness in the community. She was instrumental in coordinating a recent visit by The Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Kenneth P. Moritsugu, to Scripps Green Hospital and a local San Diego High School. Shortly after The Deputy Surgeon Generals visit, she coordinated a visit by Chris Klug, Olympic medallist and World Cup champion snowboarder and liver transplant recipient, to the San Diego high school. Chris reinforced Dr. Moritsugus message of sharing ones decision regarding organ donation. Dr. Nyberg is currently planning San Diego events to promote National Donor Day on February 14th.
