I am a native Californian, born and raised in San Diego. My parents were both school teachers. I became a doctor through an evolutionary process, starting as a chemist, then becoming a pharmacist, then attending medical school. I never really planned anything or experienced a life-changing event; I simply followed open doors that led me to ophthalmology and my subspecialty in conditions of the retina.
