Dr. Shaw is chief, Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and director, Emergency Medical Services at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She earned her MD at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and then completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. After residency training, Dr. Shaw completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and earned an MS in Clinical Epidemiology as an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow within the Clinical Epidemiology Unit at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Fellow of the American Board of Pediatrics and subspecialty boarded in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Shaw is a professor of Pediatrics and an associate senior scholar for the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. As Director of Emergency Medical Services, she is responsible for the operation of a 77,800 visit, high-acuity pediatric Emergency Department. , she is actively involved in the practice and teaching of pediatric emergency medicine and clinical research. Dr. Shaw is currently an advisor and reviewer for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a pediatric consulting editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Shaw has developed or facilitated a number of Emergency Department and community-based epidemiology projects for the Emergency Department population, is a member of the Editorial Boards for Pediatric Emergency Care and Academic Emergency Medicine and serves as an advisor for fellows in Pediatric Emergency Medicine who are enrolled in the Masters Degree Program in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her personal areas of research interest include clinical decision analysis; injury prevention, clinical epidemiology; diagnosis of urinary tract infection in the Emergency Department, predictors of need for hospitalization for children with bronchiolitis and asthma, clinical evaluation of laboratory tests and procedures and Emergency Department utilization.
