Brief Intro

As a pediatric hematologist, Katherine L. Ender, MD, MS has focused on sickle cell disease, although she is interested in all aspects of general hematology and has also been developing a specialization in bioethics.Dr. Ender was attracted to hematology and oncology as early as medical school, when she found the development and biology of these diseases to be especially interesting. Caring for patients with sickle cell disease during her internship solidified the interest in hematology, which then broadened into an excitement about both pediatric oncology and stem cell transplantation as well. After fellowship training in all three fields, Dr. Ender chose hematology because she felt particularly compelled to care for patients with sickle cell disease. "I still value very deeply my experience with pediatric oncology and stem cell transplantation, especially the positive relationships that physicians and families forge while battling life-threatening and chronic diseases".What is most exciting about Dr. Ender's work is its multidisciplinary aspect: caring for patients and their families in multiple settings (in the hospital, the clinic, the academic medical center, and community hospitals) and through multiple avenues (education, research, and collaboration with motivated colleagues and excellent teams).Dr. Ender has conducted and continues to collaborate on clinical research projects related to medications for treating sickle cell disease, including protocols for the management of sickle cell pain crisis. She is currently working on the development of clinical pathways and guidelines for the management of common complications of sickle cell disease to improve and standardize the delivery of state-of-the-art care not only at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, but also at community affiliates Harlem Hospital and Lincoln Hospital. Dr. Ender has a master's degree in clinical research and is currently pursuing a master's in bioethics.
