STRUGGLING WITH INSOMNIA?
If you find yourself completely unable to sleep at night and feel like you’ve tried everything, you’re not alone. I am one of a just a few providers who has extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, the gold standard psychotherapy treatment for insomnia. This practice aims to help patients become their own “sleep coach” and is effective for a wide range of patients, including those currently taking sleep medication.

I thought I would take the time to list a few tips I’ve found helpful for my patients over the years. By no means is this list exhaustive, but if you find any of them interesting, feel free to book a consultation with me and we can work together.

● Consider the Whole Picture: Sleep difficulties don’t exist in isolation. What life circumstances might be leading to these sleepless nights? Many patients benefit from discussing worries and stressors that contribute to their sleep difficulties, as emotional well-being is key to long-term improvement.

● Address Your Beliefs Around Sleep: It’s important to understand how certain behaviors or stimuli can negatively impact your sleep. Together, we can reassess your routine to help.

● Don’t “Chase” Sleep: Sleep trackers such as the OURA ring can be helpful for some, but it can lead others into states of orthosomnia, where we obsess over our sleep. I help patients to stop “chasing” sleep and begin letting it come naturally through modifications around thought patterns and behavior.

● Recognize Medication Use: Some patients report “sleeping well” but later reveal they rely on sleep medication. I understand that many do not want to use sleep medication forever; together, we can address the underlying root causes of insomnia instead.
