Brief Intro

Josef Prchal, MD, a Huntsman Cancer Institute investigator, is a professor in Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine at the University of Utah. He is also a member of the Cell Response and Regulation Program and the Imaging, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics Program. Prchals research focuses on defining a molecular basis for congenital and acquired hematological disorders and translational research in myeloproliferative disorders, which are cancerous disorders of the bone marrow. Prchal attended Charles University Medical School in Prague, and then completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology at the University of Toronto, Canada. He has special training in genetics working with Ernest Beutler at the City of Hope as well as at the University of California, San Francisco and Howard Hughes Institute in the laboratory of Y.W. Kan. Before joining HCI, Prchal was a professor in the Department of Hematology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, senior scientist at the University of Alabama Cancer Center, and professor and senior scientist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He serves as director of the University of Utahs Philadelphia Chromosome Negative Myeloproliferative Disorder Program, which focuses on the study of rare forms of leukemia. Prchal was a recipient of the American Cancer Societys Scholar Award.
