Dr. Benavides is a diplomat of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with board certifications in PM&R and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Benavides completed his undergraduate work at St. Mary's University at San Antonio in 1993 and received a Master's of Science from the UT San Antonio in 1995. He graduated from the UNTHSC Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft Worth where he earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) and his Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.) in 2001. He graduated from the UT Southwestern PM&R residency program in 2005 with the Senior Resident of the Year award and has mostly been in private practice since graduation.
There are several methods Dr. Benavides utilizes to maximize his patients' function and quality of life including conservative and interventional modalities. He performs traditional and ultrasound-guided joint and soft tissue injections, including cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine procedures, dorsal column neurostimulation (“spinal cord stimulatorâ€) trials, as well as more conservative therapies and medication options (including Suboxone therapy for opioid dependence). Electrodiagnostics (EMGs and nerve conduction studies) is a tool he regularly uses to help identify and diagnose his patients' problems. He has an interest in prolotherapy and is actively training to further develop his skills, in conjunction with ultrasonography, to provide non-steroidal injection options for pain relief. Using these options independently or in combination, Dr. Benavides is able not only to provide relief in a multitude of painful conditions, but more importantly, keep his patients' function optimized so that they may live their lives to the fullest.
Dr. Benavides's family emigrated from Colombia, South America to Louisville, KY where he was born. He grew up speaking Spanish at home and English in school. He moved to his adopted home town, San Antonio, TX, after the 3rd grade and earned the privilege of becoming a naturalized Texan. He has lived in Texas ever since, except for the year of his medical internship in Massillon, OH. This was also the year he married his wife, Diana. Dr. Benavides enjoys spending time with his family, and his hobbies include appreciating all types of musical performance and keeping up with his favorite NBA team. He is an admitted fan of science fiction and a technology buff.
