I'm a native Californian. I learned Spanish as an undergraduate at UC San Diego. I received my medical degree from UC San Francisco in 1988 and completed residency training in surgery at UC Irvine in 1993. From 1993 to 1997, I was an assistant professor of surgery at UCI and assistant chief of general surgery at the Long Beach VA Medical Center. I joined the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center in 1998. I've served as director of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Surgical Residency Program, which I consider to be one of the nation's best, since 1999. I became assistant chief of surgery in 2004. I hold an MBA degree from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. I've been an examiner for the American Board of Surgery. I'm currently a fellow and Governor-at-Large of the American College of Surgeons, an officer of the Los Angeles Surgical Society, and an active clinical researcher in surgery.
