Brief Intro

I am pleased to offer my home page as a means to introduce myself and to provide useful handouts and Web links. Welcome! As a child growing up in Communist China during the Cultural Revolution, I witnessed a great deal of suffering, and from a very early age I decided I wanted to become a doctor. Unfortunately, because of my family background, I was sent as a 15-year-old teenage girl to the countryside to be a farm laborer, instead of to school. However, my interest in medicine finally resulted in my being given the responsibility to deliver babies, since there was such a scarcity of doctors in the countryside. I was given three months' training to be a "barefoot doctor"! For about two years, I was responsible for delivering babies and seeing sick peasants in a 20-mile radius. Often, I would be summoned in the middle of the night and would have to walk miles alone in the dark to reach the home of a person in need. After the death of Mao, things began to liberalize in China and I was finally allowed to apply to medical school. I had to prepare for the exams all on my own since I had no junior high or high school training, but I got in! After graduating, I worked for one year at the medical school teaching biochemistry, and there developed an interest in molecular biology. This interest caused me to come to the United States to do research in the genetic basis of diseases. I decided to specialize in pathology and hematology because I could utilize my knowledge to best advantage. After I finished my pathology residency in California, I did a hematology fellowship in Washington, DC, and moved to Vallejo where my husband was working. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2001. Working at Kaiser has been wonderful. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. We work as a great team, and I believe that we offer excellent health care to our patients. My philosophy of healing is that in addition to understanding the basis of disease, which leads to both prevention and cure, one must provide a caring atmosphere, which is found at Kaiser Permanente. When I am not working, I am home with my family. I love to cook, garden, and travel, and play "Mexican Train" with my husband and son!
