Dr. Vander Kooi is a detail oriented, thorough, and evidence-based, driven provider. He prides himself on his diagnostic abilities, pharmacologic knowledge, willingness to provide patient education, and his ability to manage the care of patients with complex medical needs. Through out his career he has successfully helped several thousand individuals control their anxiety and depression. He has also assisted over 250 patients overcome opiate addiction with the use of buprenorphine.
Dr. Vander Kooi knew from a young age that he was destined to fallow in his father’s footsteps and become a Medical Doctor. As a teenager, he spent countless evenings learning about medical aliments and discussing interesting cases with his father. After graduating high school at the top of his class, he chose to complete his Bachelors in pre-med at the University of Iowa. Dr. Vander Kooi completed his degree in pharmacy in 1997 at the University of Iowa and passed the pharmacy board that same year. He deferred entry to medical school for one year in order to study abroad at Stockholms Universitet in Stockholm, Sweden. He completed his degree in medicine at the University of Iowa in 2002 and finished his psychiatry residency at Washington University in St. Louis in 2006. While in school, Dr. Vander Kooi was the recipient of multiple academic awards throughout both pharmacy and medical school.
Dr. Vander Kooi opened his private practice in 2006, was a founding partner of Clayton Behavioral, and is the Medical Director of VKPsychiatry. Dr. Vander Kooi is board certified in adult psychiatry and specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, schizophrenia, bipolar, substance abuse, and many other psychiatric ailments. He is certified to prescribe Buprenorphine for the treatment of opiate dependence.
