Dr. Jai Raman is a highly skilled cardiac and thoracic surgeon known for his efforts to develop new and innovative surgical procedures, especially for the treatment of heart failure. He helped develop ventricular containment (or the wrap procedure), which uses an innovative mesh bag to stop the heart from enlarging in patients with heart failure. He performed the first eight of these procedures in the world. Dr. Raman also helped develop Basal Annuloplasty of the Cardia Externally (BACE)--a new off-pump device for the treatment of leaky mitral valves.Dr. Raman has made significant contributions to the development of new programs at the University of Chicago in minimally invasive valve surgery and complex aortic surgery. He has more experience in minimally invasive valve surgery than most surgeons in the region. He has also acquired expertise in minimally invasive bypass surgery, which is performed without splitting the sternum.Additionally, Dr. Raman is an expert in the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. He has worked closely with cardiologists and industry to improve ablative treatment methods and to promote the use of biventricular pacing for the treatment of heart failure. His work to develop new techniques to repair mitral and tricuspid valves and adapting minimal access techniques has been particularly successful. These procedures have spared many patients from requiring full sternotomy or heart valve replacement. He specializes in "redo" valve surgery through small incisions.Dr. Raman is actively participating in a number of research initiatives. He has convened a multi-center international clinical trials group in the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His clinical research interests include aortic disease markers, renal bio-markers in cardiac surgery, kidney protection in heart surgery, arterial grafting and less invasive valve and arrhythmia surgery. He is the principle investigator in multi-center, randomized clinical trials exploring:Sodium bicarbonate as a protective agent in cardiac surgery Use of sternal plates in closing the breast bone after cardiac surgery Patency and fate of the radial artery as a bypass graft in coronary artery surgeryIn total, Dr. Raman has performed more than 2,500 heart surgeries and more than 700 thoracic operations. His surgical expertise encompasses a wide range of cardiac and thoracic procedures, with particular skill in complex, high-risk cardiac surgeries.
