Dr. Estrada earned his medical degree at Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. He then completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children, St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed clinical and research fellowships in pediatric hematology and oncology at the Department of pediatrics, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, University of Texas System Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Estrada earned a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences, at the Graduate School of biomedical sciences, University of Texas, Health Science Center at Houston, during his fellowship in pediatric hematology and hematology. His teaching appointments include serving as assistant professor, Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida and as clinical associate professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas.
Prior to joining Pediatric Specialists of Texas, he worked in private practice in San Antonio for 14 years. Dr. Estrada served as President and Acting President, Hispanic Medical Society of San Antonio and President of Pediatric Subspecialists of South Texas. Dr. Estrada is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.
His professional memberships include American Society of Hematology, American Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, Children's Oncology Group, The Society for Neuro-Oncology and National Hispanic Medical Association.
In 2011, Dr. Estrada founded the Texas Adolescent and Young Adult (TAYA) Oncology Conference whose goal is to create awareness among medical providers and the general public of the many medical and psychosocial issues characteristic of this population of patients, and to empower health care providers with the knowledge and tools to provide best-practice care to this population.
The TAYA Oncology Conference is a joint community effort by advocates from Methodist Children's Hospital and University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The conference rotates annually between Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston. The 2015 Conference will be held at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
