Current Responsibilities
Dr. Jack Cox joined the Hoag executive team in September 2006 as a senior VP and the first chief quality officer. His operational and strategic responsibilities include the five Centers of Excellence (Cancer, Neurosciences, Orthopedics, Heart & Vascular, and Womans Health) which encompass over 70 percent of the hospitas business as well as clinical performance improvement, safety, risk management, case management/utilization management, clinical
research and the medical staff office. He is also responsible for several physician groups including the Hospitalists, Intensivists, GI Hospitalists, and Neuro-Hospitalists. His annual revenue responsibilities are over $300M and $100M in expenses. In his position, he is responsible for supporting the medical staff and the clinical staff in improving all aspects of patient care including outcomes, satisfaction and value.
Prior Experience
Dr. Cox is a senior physician manager with over 20 years of executive experience. Prior to his position at Hoag, he served as the CMO and group VP (senior VP) at Premier Inc. from 1999-2005. There he led the team that developed the Clinical Performance Improvement Initiatives (precursor to the CMS- Premier HQID project), the Clinical Analytics Group, The Premier Safety Institute and the clinical product evaluation process/team. Premier is a national healthcare alliance of over 1500 not for profit hospitals that was a 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Recipient (Dr. Cox served on the executive leadership team that implemented the Baldrige criteria 2000-2005). Dr. Cox was a residency director and a medical director with Intermountain Healthcare (1994-1999) and served on their corporate Board of Directors. He has spent 13 years in academics/research and has held faculty appointments to five medical schools. He has spoken and written internationally on such topics as wellness, healthcare management and quality improvement including two books. He has served on such national groups as the selection advisory group for the AHA Quest for Quality Award, the IOM subcommittee on QIO quality and the board of directors for the Health Technology Center.
Education, Awards and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Cox received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his residency in family practice at David Grant Medical Center in California. In addition, Dr. Cox received his master in medical management from Tulane University. He is a fellow of the Academy of Family Practice and a fellow of the American College of Physician Executives.
