Brief Intro

Dr. Smith is a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and Princeton University. He completed a Master of Science Degree in Industrial and Environmental Health at Temple University and a Doctor of Medicine Degree at Temple University School of Medicine. Following a one-year surgical internship in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Dr. Smith entered the Orthopaedic Surgery residency program at Temple University. His next four years included pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Shriner’s Hospital in Philadelphia and training in total joint replacements, sports medicine, and trauma surgery at Temple University and affiliated hospitals. In 1983 Dr. Smith and his wife, Karen Galey Smith, returned to their hometown of Sewickley where they have raised their three children. "I am blessed to be surrounded by such competent physician partners and staff who have helped me develop my parallel interests in sports medicine and total joint replacements. Whether I am working with an injured athlete or a victim of arthritis contemplating joint reconstructive surgery, I take my role as teacher very seriously. I have found that time spent educating patients about their problem and its solution is very worthwhile. It is important that physician and patient understand each other’s goals and concerns." Dr. Smith is active in his community. He is a borough councilman in Edgeworth Borough and has represented his community as a Board Member of the Little Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and the Quaker Valley Recreational Association. He has been deacon of his church and has enjoyed performing in many of Sewickley’s Child Health Association musicals. His sports interests include fishing, biking, tennis, and golf. He has served as Chairman of the Surgery Department at Suburban General Hospital and Sewickley Valley Hospital.
