Dr. Farrell C. Tyson practices among an elite group of eye physicians leading the research and development of new treatments for cataracts and eye diseases. A Johns Hopkins graduate with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. TysonÂ’s contributions continue to assist ophthalmologists worldwide in their ability to offer patients new advancements in vision technology. Tyson is one of the first in the world to utilize Intraoperative Wavefront Technology during cataract surgery, a technology that will revolutionize cataract surgery. Using sophisticated instruments, Tyson is able to capture real-time refractive measurements of the patientÂ’s eye during surgery. This advanced approach will allow ophthalmologists to tailor intraoperative lenses immediately, reducing or even eliminating the need for postoperative surgery and/or postoperative eyeglasses.
Tyson continues to advance ophthalmic treatments in the area of refractive surgery, performing custom wavefront LASIK, clear lens extraction, implanting contact lenses (ICL) and providing astigmatism reduction.
A clinical investigator for the FDA, Tyson has demonstrated and lectured on his research and experiences at such prestigious venues as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Turkish Glaucoma Congress in Izmir, the Russian National Ophthalmology Congress in Moscow, the Pan African American Congress of Ophthalmology in Dubai and the European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in London and Lisbon, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Barcelona, Spain and most recently a meeting of the First International Symposium of Dhahran Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia.
TysonÂ’s Cape Coral Eye Center is a training and observation facility for the introduction of new cataract lenses. In conjunction with Abbot Medical Optics, the center is one of two "Eye Centers of Excellence" in the country where ophthalmologists are trained in cataract surgery. It is featured as a "Premier Practice in Southwest Florida" in Redbook, Better Homes and Gardens and WomanÂ’s Day magazines.
Dr. Tyson is named one of AmericaÂ’s Top Ophthalmologists by the Consumer Research Council and is one of Southwest FloridaÂ’s 40 under 40, an honor bestowed by Gulfshore Business Magazine to those who have distinguished themselves in their professions through their achievements and their charitable or civic contributions. He serves on the Editorial Board of Ophthalmology Management Magazine, where he has a monthly column. He is also a contributing author to the textbook, Mastering Refractive IOLs, The Art and Science, published by SLACK, Inc. (Copyright 2008). Copies of his articles are available on this website.
Dr. Tyson completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University in Biomedical Engineering while participating in extensive research at the Wilmer Eye Institute. His many published research projects were in the evaluation of the Excimer laser which is now used extensively in LASIK surgery. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1997 from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship in 1998 at the Medical University of South Carolina, and his Ophthalmology residency at the medical University of South Carolina at Charleston. He is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmologists, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tyson has served on six medical missions providing ophthalmic aid to those in underprivileged communities in Mexico, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Kenya and Honduras.
