I decided in high school that I wanted to become a physician. About halfway through medical school at UCLA, I chose to pursue what I felt was the most exciting career: surgery. I completed training in both pediatric surgery and pediatric urology in the early 1990s at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and worked there for many years before joining Kaiser Permanente. Along the way I met many friends, who were also surgeons, and together we enjoyed our lives both inside and outside the hospital. We water- and snow-skied, golfed, and played softball together. Eventually one of those friends became my wife, who is now also a surgeon working for Kaiser Permanente. Together we have two sons and we are waiting to see if either of them will become a surgeon.
