Brief Intro

Dr. David Shlim is president of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), an international body that serves to promote travel medicine around the world. The society has over 2500 members in 75 countries. The president of the ISTM is the highest position in travel medicine in the world. Dr. Shlim has been a member of the ISTM since it was founded in 1991, and has practiced travel medicine since 1983 when he moved to Nepal to run the CIWEC Clinic Travel Medicine Center in Kathmandu. During the fifteen years he ran the clinic it became the most famous destination travel clinic in the world, producing over forty original research papers on travel medicine topics and discovering a new cause of diarrhea in humans, Cyclospora. Dr. Shlim moved to Jackson Hole from Kathmandu in 1998, and has been practicing travel medicine locally since then. In 2007 he became the first outside medical editor for the Center for Disease Control's Health Information for International Travel, which is the official source of travel medicine information for U.S. doctors and nurses. Dr. Shlim is also the co-author of Medicine and Compassion: A Tibetan Lama's Guidance for Caregivers, a book that presents the possibilities of training one's capacity for compassion. The book has been translated into five other languages.
