I am a native Southern Californian who grew up as a Kaiser Permanente member. Even when I was a youngster, I knew that I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, because of my interest in sports and sports injuries (I have certainly had my share of injuries). During my training in orthopedic surgery at UC San Francisco, I became fascinated with spinal surgery because of the complexity of this type of surgery, the exciting new technologies, and the dramatic improvements that I saw in some patients' lives.
