Dr. Stein was born in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his undergraduate and medical school education in 1990 at C.U.N.Y. Brooklyn College and S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical School in a combined seven-year program. Dr. Stein received his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, and the New York Veterans Administration Medical Center where he also served as chief medical resident. He subsequently received his gastroenterology fellowship training at New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital and the New York Veterans Administration Medical Center. Upon completion of his gastroenterology fellowship in 1996, Dr. Stein joined Riverdale Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases.
Dr. Stein is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the subspecialty Board of Gastroenterology. He has authored many abstracts and papers which have been presented as posters at national meetings and have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of the State of New York, American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Dr. Stein has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.), Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (F.A.C.G.) and Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (A.G.A.F.).
In addition to the practice of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy, Dr. Stein has expertise in hepatology, viral hepatitis, HIV- associated liver diseases, and biliary endoscopy (E.R.C.P.). He has participated in clinical trials in the treatment of hepatitis C. Dr. Stein is the section chief of hepatology at Saint Barnabas Hospital and runs their subspecialty clinics in hepatology and HIV associated liver diseases. He is involved in community-based programs focusing on the screening and treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C.
Dr. Stein especially enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He is an avid sports fan, particularly of baseball. His favorite activities include watching New York Yankees baseball, exercising and weight training.
