Dr. Mears, a native of Oakmont, attended Cornell University and subsequently the University of Oxford Medical School where he won the Brian Johnson Prize. In 1970, he returned to Pittsburgh as an orthopaedic resident and faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989, he became Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Shadyside Hospital to supervise a rapid growth of the orthopaedic program.
In 1996, Dr. Mears moved to the Albany Medical College, Albany, NY as Professor and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery. There, he developed a minimally invasive total hip replacement technique using 2-inch incisions. In recent multi-centered clinical trials, most patients have been discharged home within a day of surgery.
Dr. Mears is the author of four orthopaedic books and numerous publications and patents related to pelvic fractures and to total joint replacement. He is a past winner of the Otto Aufranc Award by the Hip Society, the AO International Prize and the Pennal and Judet Award for Outstanding International Pelvic Surgeon. He has been a Consultant for the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health, as well as a member of the editorial board of multiple orthopaedic journals. Dr. Mears has been listed as one of the Best Medical Specialists in North America by Town and Country Magazine and as one of the Best Doctors in America by Woodward/White. He appears in American Men of Science and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Mears is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He resides in Fox Chapel with his wife and four of his six children.
