Dr. Merkel graduated with his M.D. degree from Loma Linda University. He completed his residency at White Memorial Medical Center, Martin Luther King Medical Center, (which included training at the Kerlan-Job Orthopaedic Clinic), Loma Linda University, Shriner’s Hospital for the Crippled Children and Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center. After completing a Fellowship in Orthpaedic Trauma at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center he joined the group that is now known as Arrowhead Orthopaedics.
Dr. Merkel continues to be involved in the treatment of trauma patients in addition to his usual orthopaedic practice. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the residency program at Loma Linda University and also practices at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Areas of specialty include management of limb deformities, problem fractures, foot and ankle injuries and osteoporosis treatment and prevention.
Dr. Merkel spent many of his formative years living in South America, where his parents worked as missionaries, it was there that he learned to speak fluent Spanish. He and his wife Janice have 4 children, and live in Redlands. His interests include, spending time with his children, camping trips to the local desert and Mexico to drive his sand rail, ATV riding, scuba diving, and computers.
