Dr. Suter grew up in Arlington, Virginia where he attended public schools and graduated with the first graduating class of Yorktown High School in 1962. He then went to Ghana in a cultural exchange program before beginning college at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. After two years at W&L, he transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, he took additional graduate studies at Georgetown University before joining the US Navy in 1968. He served as a junior officer in the Navy aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Albany until the end of 1970. While in the Navy, he studied chemistry and biology. Following discharge from the Navy, he went back to school first at George Mason University and later at Stanford University before starting medical school at the University of Virginia. Dr. Suter is married to Janice, a nursing administrator. He has one son, Frank, and a stepdaughter, Amanda Beahm. His hobbies include gardening, hiking and photography with some occasional carpentry on the side. He loves to travel almost anywhere.
