Dr. Issell received his medical degree and degree in biochemistry from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, and training in medical oncology at University of Otago affiliated hospitals and completed his medical oncology training as a fellow at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He received certification in internal medicine and medical oncology with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and American Board of Internal Medicine.
Throughout his career as a practicing medical oncologist and clinical researcher Dr. Issell has been involved in the development of some of the most effective treatments now available for cancer and cancer related infections through work at pharmaceutical and biotech companies, State University of New York Upstate Medical Center, Stanford University Medical Center, UCSF San Francisco General Hospital and University of Hawaii. Under Dr. Issells leadership, the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center achieved National Cancer Institute designation the highest level of recognition a cancer center can attain.
Dr. Issell has over 100 publications in scientific journals, has received multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as the principal investigator and served on many NIH grant review panels.
Dr. Issell currently serves as corporate vice president of clinical research for Scripps Health. In this role he is responsible for developing research programs that expand access to clinical research for physicians and patients throughout the Scripps system.
Dr. Issell has a medical oncology practice at Scripps Mercy Clinic, San Diego where he provides patients with consultations on cancer treatment options.
