Dr. Barbara Benevento specializes in spinal cord injury medicine and is interested in all aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation. After receiving her medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in New York, she completed her first residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, and Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. Dr. Benevento then completed a second residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and also completed fellowship training in spinal cord injury medicine. Dr. Benevento is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with additional subspecialty certification in spinal cord injury medicine. She is also certified as an acupuncturist, after completing her training at the University of California at Los Angeles. She joined Kessler Institute in 1997 and served as Clinical Chief of Spinal Cord Injury Services, supervising patients' rehabilitation and directing a number of special programs. She is currently the Director of the Ventilator Program working with both spinal cord injury and brain injury patient populations. Dr. Benevento has lectured extensively and published articles on various aspects of spinal cord injury and continues to conduct research in this area. An assistant clinical professor at UMDNJ Medical School, the students there named her "Teacher of the Year" for 1999-2000 for her outstanding abilities as an educator. She was also awarded the Henry H. Kessler Award for Medical Excellence by her colleagues in 2007
